The combined firm—formed from the 2022 merger of Allen & Overy and Shearman & Sterling —has restored partner payouts to £2.2 million on average, according to Financial Times. This marks a return to pre-combination earnings after the integration period compressed margins.
Partner compensation is the scoreboard elite law firms cannot hide from. Clients, competitors, and restless rainmakers all read the same signal: the merger has stopped looking expensive. For a firm this size, the recovery signals stability but not yet dominance.
The real test arrives when A&O Shearman moves beyond recovery. If profits merely return to old levels, the merger bought scale and headlines. If they keep rising, it bought pricing power and competitive separation.
Getting back to where you were before a deal is the minimum entry fee, not the trophy. Big law combinations get sold on cross-border reach, deeper client ties, and fatter margins. £2.2 million says the patient left recovery. It does not say the surgery changed the business.
