Engadget spotted Dynamic Lyrics, an iPhone app that displays live song lyrics on Apple CarPlay after you link Apple Music or Spotify. The feature syncs with whatever's playing, turning your dashboard into a karaoke display. Drivers should keep their eyes on the road; passengers get the singalong.
This app is a small feature with a large implication. Apple CarPlay is shifting from utility—maps, calls, media controls—into entertainment real estate. Every new app that lands on the car screen is a test of how far Apple will let the dashboard become a second living room. The battle over driver attention is moving from safety to screen real estate.
Expect more developers to push CarPlay's boundaries with music, video-adjacent features, and passenger-focused apps. The ceiling won't be set by imagination. It'll be set by safety rules, Apple's review standards, and whether regulators eventually decide car screens have become too distracting.
Karaoke on the dashboard is fun. What matters more is that a third-party developer found another way to make the car screen feel less like a car screen and more like a phone mounted at eye level. That's the prize every platform wants. The screen you glance at most wins your attention. For passengers on a road trip, this is entertainment. For anyone who thinks modern cars already demand too much from drivers, it's one more distraction.
