Apple limits Mac disk access as AI agents substantially increase risk

According to The Verge, Apple plans to tighten how Mac apps obtain full disk access—a permission that grants software sweeping read access to files, messages, and personal data. The shift responds to risks posed by AI agents that can operate autonomously across a user's machine. Apple's move signals that the current permission model is inadequate for software designed to read, summarize, and execute tasks at machine speed.

AI assistants work best when they can search your entire machine. For users, that creates a hard choice: smarter tools or privacy. Apple is saying the old permission flow—where users click "yes" once and forget—is too loose when an agent can access everything. Tighter controls force the AI category to mature. Apps that demand full disk access will face friction. Those that work within narrower permissions will win.

Meta disputed recent claims about Messages access. Spokesperson Andy Stone noted that reading messages requires users to enable both full disk access and a separate Messages connector. That's exactly why Apple is making such consent harder to grant by default. The current system relies on users understanding what they're allowing.

Apple just admitted what the industry has avoided: an AI agent with broad local access is a security liability first, a convenience feature second. That doesn't kill agent software. It forces the category to grow up. The winners will be tools that deliver real value with narrower permissions. Most people shouldn't have to choose between a smarter app and their entire drive.
