According to TechCrunch, citing The Wall Street Journal, the AI inference startup Baseten is nearing a new financing round at a $13 billion valuation. The round comes five months after Baseten announced a $300 million Series E at $5 billion. Some investors are paying $13 billion, others $11 billion.
This signals where AI capital is moving. Training gets headlines. Inference is where models become revenue. This is the layer that runs deployed models reliably and cheaply, where latency and cost decide winners, and where investors expect faster returns than pure research bets deliver.
Split pricing is the tell. When some buyers come in at $13 billion and others at $11 billion, the market is still haggling over valuation. Using structure to keep optics hot while pricing discipline lags is a warning: this sector wants the glow of AI multiples before it has earned them.
Baseten is a scoreboard for the inference trade. Venture firms are paying up for the infrastructure layer that helps enterprises run models reliably and cheaply. But split-price rounds expose the gap between valuation appetite and valuation discipline. At $13 billion, that gap gets expensive fast.
