Canadian legislator reads LLM prompt in floor speech

According to Ars Technica, Bill Oliver delivered remarks in the New Brunswick legislature that included phrasing that reads exactly like an LLM rewrite instruction. Video of the speech circulated widely, showing Oliver reading what appears to be the AI system's stage directions into the official Hansard record without catching the error.

If lawmakers are drafting speeches with AI assistance but not reviewing them carefully, the result is lower accountability, weaker arguments, and public records filled with words nobody actually owned before speaking them. A legislator's floor speech is supposed to represent deliberate judgment. Outsourcing that to a chatbot and then reading it verbatim breaks that contract.

This will happen again. The question is whether legislatures and political offices establish basic rules for AI-assisted drafting —disclosure requirements, mandatory review protocols, or clear guidance on what counts as acceptable use. Right now, there's nothing stopping the next gaffe.

Using AI to draft speeches isn't the mistake. Plenty of staffers already do it, and plenty more will. The mistake was treating generated text like office supplies instead of source material that requires judgment. Politics runs on prepared language, but someone still has to read the page before it becomes part of the record. Oliver just proved the gap between using a tool and outsourcing attention to it.
