According to TechCrunch, Jumper announced Friday he is joining Anthropic after nearly nine years at Google DeepMind. The AlphaFold researcher and Nobel Prize winner was also involved in Google's coding tools effort. His departure comes the same week DeepMind veteran Noam Shazeer announced he was heading to OpenAI.
When a marquee scientist who built DeepMind's scientific credibility walks to a rival, it signals the real battle is for the people who can turn frontier research into products customers will buy. Prestige doesn't guarantee momentum.
Jumper's next role at Anthropic will tell you where the company thinks it can move fastest. If he joins coding, scientific AI, or enterprise tools, that's where Anthropic believes it can take share from Google faster than chasing chatbot features.
DeepMind still has the trophies. Anthropic just grabbed the signal. Google can afford to lose almost anyone on paper, but repeated exits by high-status researchers tell the market something harder to spin: brilliant science is not the same thing as building products people want. Jumper matters because he is not random talent. He is exactly the kind of name that makes recruits, partners, and enterprise buyers ask where the center of gravity is shifting in 2026.
