Monsters of God Review: Reptile Smugglers Get Tiger King Treatment

The Guardian reviewed Eric Goode's new documentary series about the exotic reptile trade, built around a rivalry between rival smugglers. Goode, who directed Tiger King and Chimp Crazy, applies the same formula: chaotic personalities, high stakes, lurid detail. The result is a bingeable account of a real black market told as a feud between eccentrics.

Wildlife trafficking is a transnational crime pipeline. Extraction, smuggling, demand, enforcement failure—each step feeds the next. When prestige documentaries frame it as personality-driven mayhem, viewers remember the characters and forget the system. The reptile trade moves billions annually across borders, but a doc that leads with the weirdest people in the room leaves the actual trafficking machinery invisible.

Tiger King detonated during the 2020 lockdown and proved exotic-animal obsession could be mass entertainment. Goode has built a career on that formula since. It still works. It also keeps collapsing conservation, exploitation, and celebrity into one sticky package.

The problem isn't that this genre finds outrageous people—they exist. It's that the camera rewards them. A reptile-smuggling feud could expose how black markets operate across borders, who profits, and why enforcement fails. Instead, if it settles for another freak-show arc, the traffickers get exactly what modern media hands out most easily in 2026: notoriety with production values.
