Paper Mills Selling Fraudulent Research Authorship

Shadowy paper mills are selling fake authorship on fabricated research through encrypted chat apps, letting researchers buy their way onto published studies without doing the work.

Paper Mills Selling Fraudulent Research Authorship

The Guardian reports that research integrity specialist Dr. Reese Richardson has documented networks operating on Telegram, WhatsApp, and Facebook that openly advertise fraudulent research authorship, peer-review manipulation, and academic credentials for sale. Pay a fee, get your name on a published paper, skip the research entirely. Journals and universities rarely catch it.

Medical claims, university rankings, grant funding, and news coverage all assume published papers passed some basic credibility test. When paper mills corrupt the research record, the public gets polluted information. Honest researchers compete against people who purchased a CV. Policymakers cite studies that never existed. The damage compounds because retractions come years later, if at all.

The fix isn't catching scammers. It's rewiring how institutions measure success. Universities and funders need to shift from counting publications to auditing authorship claims and methods. Journals that tighten peer review will matter. But hiring and promotion rules matter more. As long as tenure and grants reward volume over rigor, paper mills have customers.

This is a media story because science publishing is part of the information economy, and right now it has a spam problem with tenure attached. Paper mills thrive for the same reason click farms do: platforms scale distribution, institutions reward volume, and cleanup lands on readers after the damage is done. The real embarrassment isn't that fraud exists. It's that so many systems still pay people for looking published instead of being right.
