According to Ars Technica, Plex launched a new five-year Plex Pass subscription for $250 while raising its Lifetime Plex Pass to $750. Until this week, $250 bought permanent access. The lifetime tier has climbed steadily from $75 at launch to $120 to now $750.
This hits Plex's core users hardest. The company built its reputation among cord-cutters and home media tinkerers who valued paying once and being left alone. A tripling of the lifetime price signals that Plex's business now prioritizes recurring revenue over the one-time-purchase loyalty that made it different from Netflix.
Plex is being honest: the era of generous lifetime software deals ends when investors need returns. Fair. But a home media server is not Netflix. The more Plex prices itself like a subscription platform, the more users will ask why they should trust a company that once sold permanence. Now it costs $750.
