According to Engadget, CEO David Ellison announced the combined company will operate under the Skydance name after the deal closes this month. The merger brings Paramount+, HBO Max, DC, Harry Potter, and Game of Thrones under one corporate identity borrowed from Ellison's studio.
Branding decisions in mergers are power signals. Dropping both Paramount and Warner Bros. from the corporate name tells employees, talent, and investors this is not a merger to preserve legacy brands. It's a reset built around the buyer's identity, where streaming, libraries, and cost control will all be measured against one metric: what serves Skydance best.
The real test starts after closing. The company must decide whether to keep HBO Max and Paramount+ as separate consumer brands, bundle them, or consolidate teams and projects. That choice will determine whether viewers see two platforms or one, and whether Hollywood workers face layoffs or integration.
This naming strips away the usual merger fiction. Skydance is not buying two studios to become their caretaker. It's using their libraries and subscriber bases to vault into the top tier. The old names get demoted from corporate identity to product labels. In media, that usually means nostalgia for the audience and spreadsheets for everyone else, especially in a $110 billion deal.
