According to Engadget, Spotify's Premium subscriber base grew 9 percent year-over-year to 300 million, while monthly active users reached 777 million. The streaming giant posted €4.78 billion in quarterly revenue and €545 million in net income, with a record 33.4 percent gross margin.
At 300 million paying subscribers, Spotify has become infrastructure. That scale absorbs friction. A price hike, a clumsy redesign, or a push into audiobooks costs less loyalty when you own a third of the global streaming market. Smaller rivals can't match that margin for error.
Spotify's leverage isn't the app. It's the installed base. Labels need its distribution. Podcasters need its audience. Users keep paying even when the product gets bloated with features nobody asked for. That's a toll booth. Toll booths don't have to be good, just unavoidable.
