White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump's patience with Thune is wearing thin because Senate Republicans have not moved the president's SAVE America Act before lawmakers leave town, according to Politico. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has said he lacks the votes, even as Trump has ramped up public complaints.
This tests who actually runs a Republican Senate: the elected leader counting votes, or the president demanding movement on his timetable. If Thune caves, every GOP senator gets the message that Trump's urgency matters more than vote math. If he holds, he absorbs public humiliation from the White House.
Thune faces a binary choice before recess: force the bill forward and risk a failed push that weakens him, or delay and invite more White House pressure. Either path erodes his authority to manage his own conference on future legislation.
Trump is converting a vote-count problem into a loyalty test. That dominates the party's conversation, but it doesn't create votes. What it does is leave Thune with less room to lead the next time a hard bill lands on the floor. The cost isn't this vote. It's the precedent.
