New analysis from Action on Smoking and Health, reported by The Guardian, found that more than half of adult smokers in Britain believe vaping is just as harmful as smoking, or worse. The evidence contradicts this: vaping carries risks, but experts agree it is far less dangerous than burning tobacco.
This is a public-health failure with real consequences. If smokers see the lower-risk exit ramp as just another cliff, more stay with the product that kills on a mass scale. Some even reverse course and return to cigarettes. Flattened risk messaging kills the incentive to quit.
UK health bodies, ministers, and newsrooms face pressure to communicate two truths at once: vaping has risks, and smoking remains far worse. Without clearer messaging, smokers will keep choosing the deadlier option.
Bad health messaging has a body count. When every nicotine story gets flattened into the same panic, the cigarette market wins and the smoker who might have quit loses. Risk ladders only work if you actually explain them.
